Performers

Mixcoalt Aztec Dancers

Jesus Martinez and his brother Francisco Alvarez founded the group Aztec Dancers eight years ago. Their goal was to gather the traditions of Aztec culture and represent them throughout their dances. The Aztec Dancers have participated in the Day of the Dead celebration for the last two years. Every year, including this one, they open the procession with their ritualistic sounds made with the tambor. When the procession gets to Pickelweed Center, they bless the Altars and perfom the Dance of the Dead and offer a Tonanzin to the Virgin of Guadalupe.   Any person interested in learning more about the Aztec Dancers can reach Jesus Martinez at 415 488 7339

Chan Kahal Mayan Dance Group

Chan-Kahal was founded on November 14, 2003. Some members of the State of Yucatan visited California, and they encouraged a group of individuals to organize a group that would represent the traditions of Yucatan and also serve their community of Peto. During 2004, the group made many different activities to raise money in order to buy an ambulance for the town of Peto. In 2005, the group worked persistently to build a house for handicap people in the same town. Once this community service was done, the group undertook the goal of preserving the traditions of Maya culture throughout their dances. The dresses worn for these dances are very colorful and handmade by Mayan women.  The main objective of Chan-Kahal is not only to preserve the Maya culture but also to make it known in the community. We are proud to be part of the Maya heritage and we teach our children our sacred traditions. By teaching our children the importance of our background, we are ensuring that the Mayan culture will live regardless of the place where we live. Our group has participated in different cultural gatherings and events in several places in the Bay Area. We rehearse every Friday at the Canal Welcome Center, Every person interested in learning and participating in our group is welcome to contact us because our Maya culture lives! Let's keep it alive!  For more information you can contact Alma Pech bejlae@yahoo.com  415-261-0182
